WHAT IS A YOGA THERAPIST?

It is worth knowing that a Certified Yoga Therapist is not the same as a Yoga Teacher. A Yoga Therapist is not an Instructor with a therapeutic speciality or a yoga teacher with some extra training in healing through yoga. A Certified Yoga Therapist is a specially trained professional whose education and experience has been reviewed and approved to meet standards set by a governing body. My own Yoga Therapy training was in addition to my original 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and took over 500 hours of in-person study at The Minded Institute in London over an 18 month period. This was in addition to reading, coursework, asana practice, homework and essays.

I have also trained in Yoga Therapy for Insomnia, Chronic Pain. Back Pain and Cancer.

WHAT IS YOGA THERAPY?

Yoga therapy works through the medium of some or all of  yoga postures, mindfulness, meditation, movement, breathwork, stretching, lifestyle choices and relaxation to address specific  physical and/or mental issues.

Entering Yoga Therapy is a commitment to your health and a wish to make changes to your daily life to enhance your wellness. It can be as simple as a desire to prevent injury and disease by boosting physical strength or your immune system. Or it can go deeper and start to release long standing patterns of physical and/or mental patterns of behaviour. You may have already worked on these patterns or issues using talking therapy practices. Yoga therapy can often bring relief from challenges in life that have not been helped by a talking therapy, or indeed, it can work alongside another therapy.

HOW DOES IT WORK IN PRACTICE?

Yoga Therapy is a personal practice tailored to suit you and your individual needs. Normally there will initially be a series of  6 sessions, but sometimes one session is all it takes to re-set your lifestyle and develop and plan a new way forward. Other times the work to release deep seated trauma or patterns of behaviour and thought processes can take up to two years.

THE FIRST SESSION: usually lasts 1.5 hours and will involve:

Going through the detailed intake form which you will have completed and handed to me prior to the session. We will discuss the issues you would like to address and the results you would like to see. We will explore your health history, lifestyle, goals, posture, pain, and movement.

We will create a practice which responds to your specific needs and goals. The direction of our work will be guided by an Assessment completed during our first session.

I will teach you some, or all, of the following to take away with you and to help enhance your wellbeing between sessions:

Specific breathwork

Yoga postures

Meditation

Mindfulness

Lifestyle changes

Based on our findings and your goals I will develop a tailor-made plan for your needs that may include postures, breathing and relaxation techniques, lifestyle enrichment; and movements and practices from other disciplines.

SUBSEQUENT SESSIONS will last for one hour and will involve working together to bring about the desired changes. This will involve a commitment to yourself to practice at home for at least 20 minutes in the morning and evening at least three times a week but preferably and for the best results, every day.

These sessions can be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on your wishes and the desired outcomes.

REHABILITATION AND PAIN MANAGEMENT

Private yoga therapy is helpful for those seeking to develop a home practice, looking for expert guidance as they recover or rehabilitate in any way, help in managing pain or symptoms of illness or learning how to safely enter group classes

NB There are no prerequisites for beginning yoga therapy. You do not need to be flexible, spiritual, or peaceful in any way. The only requirement is a sincere wish to open, grow and fulfil your highest potential along with a commitment to yourself

FEES

  • First Session (1.5 hours): £60.00
  • Course of five one-hour sessions taken in consecutive weeks: £200.00
  • Drop in Yoga Therapy Sessions (1 hour): £45.00 per session
